Islam allows competition in goodness. Islam allows that people try to excel and do things better, but without getting involved in hatred and jealousy and without wishing bad things for others.
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alaihi wa-sallam) said: “Envy is allowed in two cases, in case of a man whom Allah has given the Qur’aan and who recites it throughout night and day; and a man on whom Allah has bestowed wealth who gives it away throughout night and day.” [Saheeh al-Bukharee and Saheeh Muslim]
Knowledge’ stands for the knowledge of the Quran and Hadith because this knowledge alone is beneficial for man, and it is through this knowledge that correct judgements can be made. This hadith encourages acquiring useful knowledge and wealth to spend only in the ways pleasing to Allah (subhana wa ta’ala).
